Jack Johnson is very nice but a little bit boring sometimes.Buy Donavon Frankenreiter.
I caught myself waking up with the song in my mind, which when I finally heard it again, I was hooked enough to find the artist. This is based on the fact that I haven't heard the whole album. I am giving a middle of the road review. After listening to a sampling, I will buy it. I heard "Your Heart" once on Margaritaville Radio. I didn't know the name, artist, or anything else, but it was 'background' music as driving. Depending on the quality of the album, other Donavan albums may come in the future. Old fashioned, it will be CDs as I like owning the 'printed copy' rather than a download.
This is great stuff. Yes, it sounds like Jack Johnson a little, but with a lot more range, and more of a band sound than just one guy with a guitar (not to knock Jack, I like him, I just like Donavon better).
You will no doubt hear classic rock influence, disco, flamenco and some of the greatest singer-song writers of our time. I enjoy listening to Donavon Frankenreiter for his laid back Jack Johnson clone style. The difference of "typical" DF material infused with late 1960's-70's tunes is genius. Listen closely. By breathing new life into his style, DF's unpredictability and risk taking steal my vote for one of the best albums of 2008. My brain was kick started and zoned into detail to lyrics, style, arrangements, influence and reason.
For those of you who may be to young to know these masters of music, do your research. Of the massive collection of Frankenreiter's library this album caught my immediate attention. Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Jim Croce, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Buffet, CCR and other masters of southern rock are mixed in each track, without losing the laid back beach sound associated with Frankenreiter. Creatively and stylistically this is a successful departure from the norm. The album cover alone reminds me of wacky and loveable Joe Walsh. Donavon Frankenreiter has brought back a time period long on the endangered species list.
But after hearing how awesome he was live I was looking for something a little more. It has his same sound.
i have enjoyed his stuff from the very beginning. I think DF has a great singing voice.
This one was a little bit of a let down from that. I got the live album he did at ABbey road.
It was awesome. Which is awesome if you love that sound.
It was worth the purchase.
